I never realized nature could be captured in such a way until I found myself looking more at our next guests photography. You may have seen some of her work on Instagram or perhaps used somewhere else as wallpaper (that someone probably took without asking), but if you’ve never seen it before, I highly doubt you’d forget it.
Valkyria Ulvdottir is the woman behind the magic. And with over 16k followers on IG, it’s clear to see that her photography is quite popular! She allowed me to interview her and I was able to learn a little more about herself as well as her love of photography and nature. Read now as she shows us a look into her life & love.
Luny: Can you please tell everyone your name and what your last name “Ulvdottir” means exactly? I have never heard it and am curious.
Valkyria Ulvdottir: Valkyria Ulvdottir, Ulvdottir means daugther of wolves, where ulv is an older form of the swedish word varg (wolf) and dottir means daughter.
Luny: How long have you been taking pictures and what sort of equipment do you normally use?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: I started my photography journey about 8 years ago because i always used to run early in the mornings out in the woods and i saw so many amazing stuff that i just had to get a camera and from there i got extremely passionate about photography but it is only in the last 3 years that i have been more serious about it, before it was most a hobby where i did not really care what i took pictures of.
I use a Nikon D5300 with a 18-140 mm lens and a 10-20 mm lens, a tripod and a remote for my self portrait images. And editing i normally do in Lightroom and Photoshop CC
Luny: Aside from capturing beautiful and mystical photos in Sweden, where else have you traveled and taken pictures at?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: I have traveled to some great countries in Europe but not since i started photography so i have only been taking pictures in Sweden.
Luny: What destinations do you have in mind to do photography at in the future and why exactly?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: Alaska is my main goal to get to go to because the nature is just simply amazing and the wildlife, would love that solitary wilderness they have there. Also Iceland because of the rawness of the landscape and the history, the north of Norway, simply stunning fjords and mountains
Luny: I see the majority of your photographs involve nature. Have you considered taking other types of photography and maybe will do so in the future?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: I have taken abit portraits but mainly i don’t like working with others, i prefer to be on my own, but in the future when i have the money i need i will do a series of photos about the Scandinavian folklore and then i will be needing models, but no i don’t think i will ever change my style, nature is my passion.
Luny: If you could take pictures with one person in the world, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: I would have to say Brooke Shaden, here photography is stunning and dark in a weird way, would love to take some photos with her.
Luny: Growing up as a child, was your heart set on being a photographer? If not, what did you want to do initially?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: No, when i was a kid i wanted to be a cop, more into murder investigator or a S.W.A.T, but then i because a rebellious teenager and it took me about to my early 20 before i got my passion for photography
Luny: What has been the most challenging of difficult shot for you to capture and why?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: The most difficult must have been my self portrait called Sorrow, a lot of editing, and but together by several images, but a shot i´m really proud of.
Luny: If you had to end up living in a city, with no forest or any type of beautiful outdoors around, would you still do photography?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: Not that it would ever happen, but if it did, i think i would still be doing photography but more fine art type of photography.
Luny: Finally, do you have anyone you’d like to say thank you to or any websites you’d like to mention?
Valkyria Ulvdottir: I would love to thank my boyfriend who always have stood by my side and always supported me in my photography and thanks to everybody who support me and likes and shares my images, it means the world to me <3 I would love to share my etsy shop that i will soon open again to sell fine art prints http://www.etsy.com/se-en/shop/UlvdottirTrolldom it has been closed for along time now but i will soon have it up.
