Brave, brave woman lets a huge spider crawl all over her face

TwitterFacebook

After a woman in Pensacola, Florida discovered a golden orb weaver (a type of spider) in her home, she decided to relocate it to a “more appropriate location” — one that we assume is not inside a house.

But before being subjected to relocation, the spider decided to crawl around on the woman’s face. Surprisingly, the woman seemed fairly cool with that, a reaction to which I absolutely cannot relate. (To be fair, it’s not a particularly aggressive spider and does have a low-risk bite, but … still.)

Here’s hoping this yellow friend has now woven a beautiful circular web somewhere in the Great Outdoors. Read more…

NASA honors ‘Hidden Figures’ inspiration with a new research facility

TwitterFacebook

More than 50 years after Katherine Johnson first helped send astronauts into space, the once “hidden figure” is hidden no more at NASA.

The federal agency named a new research facility in Johnson’s honor this week. The Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia opened Friday.

Johnson was part of a group of black women mathematicians whose calculations — done by hand — were essential to NASA’s early space missions. She was memorably portrayed by Taraji P. Henson in the movie Hidden Figures last year.  Read more…

Amazon will deliver Chipotle, Chili’s, and your other fast-casual faves

TwitterFacebook

The food-delivery wars never end, and now Amazon has a new play against Postmates and UberEats.

The Whole Foods owner just partnered with Olo, a restaurant software system used by many popular fast-casual eateries. The partnership means that most restaurants using the Olo system will now be available for delivery on Amazon Restaurants.

For the most part, these are the kinds of places you can usually only order from on Postmates: fast-casual restaurants that don’t offer their own delivery. Think Chipotle, Applebee’s, Sweetgreen, Shake Shack, Chili’s, Red Robin, Noodles & Company, and Jamba Juice.  Read more…

There’s a new hottest pepper in town: Pepper X

TwitterFacebook

Turns out, the Carolina Reaper wasn’t quite devilish enough. There’s a new hottest pepper in town — allegedly, at least — and it’s called Pepper X.

This particular mouth destroyer was created by Ed Currie, who founded the appropriately-named Puckerbutt Pepper Company. He’s also responsible for the Reaper, which held the title of world’s hottest pepper (at 1.5 million Scoville units) until it was bested by Dragon’s Breath (2.48 Scoville units) in May.

Now, he’s taking back the title.

Per a video from First We Feast, Pepper X destroys the competition at around 3.18 Scoville units, although that number has yet to be officially confirmed as a world record. (That will probably happen in November, according to Currie.)  Read more…

9 tweets that killed the internet’s favorite memes

TwitterFacebook

If a meme is lucky it might live about a month so before fading out of our minds when an exciting new inside joke catches our eye.

However, from Doge to the dab, some of the internet’s best memes have met premature demises, all thanks to a single tweet that completely missed the mark.

Though no meme can ever really “die” per se, once they’ve reached the ultimate level of mortal embarrassment, what’s the point? Memes simply aren’t as fun once the shark’s been jumped.

Here are 9 times desperate politicians and brands attempting to be cool jumped on our favorite internet memes and managed to kill them off with one single tweet. Read more…

LeBron James drags Trump with a perfect ‘U Bum’

TwitterFacebook

There are so many things to call President Donald Trump.

On Saturday morning, LeBron James found the perfect one. The NBA star called Trump “U bum” over the president’s rescinded invitation for Steph Curry to visit the White House, which came only after Curry stated that he didn’t want to go anyway.

U bum @StephenCurry30 already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!

— LeBron James (@KingJames) September 23, 2017

It’s so simple, yet so perfect. Who needs to curse out the president when “U bum” gets it across so well?  Read more…

At the request of Chrissy Teigen, moms share the meanest things their kids have said

TwitterFacebook

Little kids can really throw away the filter when it comes to sharing their feelings—in fact, they will often say pretty much anything. Sometimes this is adorable. And sometimes … it is scathing.

For proof, look no further than the following stories. After a difficult day, Chrissy Teigen asked moms on Twitter to share the times their kids were, uh, less than angelic.

I am having a very rough day and it would help me a lot if any moms would like to share stories of their kids being mean to them

Pete Souza reminds us of when our president wasn’t feuding with every pro sports league

TwitterFacebook

In 48 hours, President Donald Trump ignited feuds with the NFL and the NBA

Hey, remember when the president didn’t do that?

Pete Souza does. The Obama White House photographer turned full-time shade-thrower posted a photo of President Obama with Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry on Saturday morning.

“President Obama with Steph Curry last year at the White House. The President was ‘helping’ Steph with his jump shot release,” Souza captioned the photo.  Read more…

You don’t need to be a Trekkie to enjoy ‘Star Trek Discovery’

TwitterFacebook

I’ve lost count of the number of times my fellow nerds have rolled their eyes at the ongoing delay and behind-the-scenes drama of Star Trek Discovery. The show’s launch date slipped by 9 months; showrunner Bryan Fuller departed under unusual circumstances; CBS decided to screen it only on its $6-a-month All Access streaming service, greatly limiting the potential audience.

I can’t speak to whether consumers will flock to All Access for this one show. But having seen the first three episodes, I can attest to the quality of the product in question.

This is science fiction TV of a caliber that I haven’t seen since the Battlestar Galactica reboot of the 2000s. And you don’t have to be a Trekkie to enjoy it.  Read more…

Here’s what’s coming to (and going from) Hulu in October

TwitterFacebook

Fall TV is back, baby, and Hulu is still the number one place to get it. Apart from returning shows on the CW and Netflix originals, Hulu has your next-day broadcast network darlings and underdogs — as well as a formidable movie library adding no less than 12 Godzilla movies this month. Buckle up.

Top pick: Last Man on Earth

Take your apocalypse with a healthy dose of humor from Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, Mary Steenburgen, and guest star Kristen Wiig. Their ragtag gang navigates the barren earth after a deadly virus kills most of humanity, and in Season 3 they’re on the run from volatile nuclear sites. Read more…

I’m God and I totally forgot that I was supposed to end the world today

TwitterFacebook

Christian numerologist David Meade’s theory that the world will end on Sept. 23, due to what he sees as biblical signs, has thus far been met with dull shrugs from the world’s citizens.

Here to comment is God.

Well, it’s official: I’m God and I am a frigging huge moron! I completely forgot that I was supposed to end the world today.

Today is Sept. 23, 2017 and that guy who said the world was supposed to end today was totally correct. But jeez louise, I freakin’ completely blanked on it.

Boy oh boy, do I feel like a friggin’ DOOF or what?
